Catch me; on the right day and I might admit, I’ve been a photographer for a good many years. Exactly how many, is a closely guarded secret. But when I started, we use to process films using Kodak E4. I suspect most of you won’t have a clue what I’m talking about try Googling Ektachrome.
To earn a living I’ve done most forms and types of photography. I am and have been my entire career a generalist, not a specialist. I realised very early on, I’m a Magpie by nature. To succeed in photography I needed to find regular new challenges. I don’t have the personality traits to become a master in a single discipline. Me, I go to Africa and it’s like OK I know the Lion is over there, but have you seen these small blue flowers. This is how it is, for better or worse my own eccentric photographic career.
So what’s the point of this blog, try something you haven’t tried before. The other weekend The Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain held its 34th Aviemore Sled Dog Rally. It’s just down the road from us, so Jacky and I thought it would be fun to go and investigate. So as totally insane people; who carry heavy photographic gear around the countryside, for a living. What do we decide to do on our day off, take a camera or two and a couple of lenses, with us, as you do.
It’s a great day out. Competitors compete over a 4-mile course pulled along by a team of Huskies. And taking cameras was great fun. We both had to try think about the mechanics of this type of photography. Whilst a lack of experience and knowledge meant visualisation was difficult. We came away having learnt a lot and with skills that will apply to our wildlife photography. After all that surely that’s what photography should be about, the next new challenge
