Living with wildlife all round you leads to new activities. It’s feed the birds and voles first thing. Make sure you put out badger food in the evening; enough to encourage them into the garden, but not too much to detract from their natural foraging habits.
We have now identified three individual badgers, calling them Big Bum, White Throat and Little Badger. Slowly we are getting to know them as individuals and their nightly activities. But, animals are not predicable, which we forgot.
There we were sitting waiting for Big Bum to arrive, time went by and still no badger. Oh no, goes through your mind, I hope he is ok. It is now 20:40 hrs and we both look at one another.
“What do you think wait a bit longer or make a cup of tea?”
Tea wins out. We should have made tea and continued watching, as about 15 minutes later two badgers appear, White Throat and Little Badger. How do we know? Ah, the great technology called trail cam! Big Bum did come back later, only to find that someone else had been eating the peanuts!
Seeing that we have such sneaky badgers, we decided that when we weren’t able to watch them, we’d capture them on film. Badger cam runs each evening capturing their activities after we have gone to bed.
The trail cam, we hope will give us a better understanding of badger behaviour and how they interact as a group. We believe that our three visitors are all from the same Clan.
Our garden visitor list is increasing and we will bring you more adventures from our woodland friends in the ensuing months.
When the badger visit comes to end, we always wish them well and say “Take care badgers”, and for those of you who remember Hill Street Blues, “Let’s be careful out there”. Remember your green cross code.
