Heart in mouth moment

14 Nov , 2016

This weekend was absolutely dreadful. We had to go out Saturday morning, as we drove out of our driveway; we came across a dead Badger at the side of the main A road. Immediately you think is it one of the Badgers which visit our garden every night. On the way back we slowed down at the site of the Road Traffic Collision to try and ID the body.

The rest of Saturday was spent worrying if it was in fact one of “our Badgers”. Saturday night we started our vigil early. The feeders prepped with tasty morsels. 6 o’clock came and went as did 7 then at 7:45pm a Badger appeared out of the darkness.

The problem was this was a very slimline version of a Badger not our regular very large “Big Bum”. A few minutes and a quick peak at the nether regions confirmed, not “Big Bum”.

Another victim, because people, drive too fast on our country roads. A poignant reminder that too many, road users, and innocent animals, who are just trying to go about their daily lives are killed by driving too fast at night.

As it got dark on Sunday we put out food as normal and gave a thought to “Big Bum” and said a little pray to the Badger gods to keep safe the Badgers visiting our garden. Before we sat down to eat we had a quick look out the window and couldn’t see any movement. After dinner, checked again and to our delight “Big Bum” was back.

We don’t know why “Big Bum” didn’t pay us a visit on Saturday but whatever the reason the relief was heart felt. But our relief was tinged with sadness that although it was not the Badger we see most often in our garden it was another Badger killed on our roads.
