We were asked the other day, I am thinking of buying a posh camera for my girlfriend, which camera should I buy? It’s a question we get asked a lot, especially around Christmas time. The second add on question is what make Nikon or Canon? Having been asked so many times, we decided to write this blog to answer the question for our readers.
Ok let’s address the big issue. Should you buy Canon or Nikon? Honest answer, it doesn’t matter. There I have said it. Committed a heinous crime, this one statement will generate more hatred from the advocates. Some will already be clicking on the comments button. But the truth is I have never looked at a print, monitor or projected image and been able to tell what camera was used. To be honest I am more interested in the image than the camera that took it. But if you can tell, then buy the camera that produced the best image to your eyes.
Next question, DSLR or compact? Do you need to be able to change lenses? Do you mind carrying about a large camera in its own bag? Or do you want a camera you can pop in a pocket? If the answer is lots of lenses and you don’t mind carrying a bag around buy a DSLR otherwise buy a compact.
Now comes, the most difficult concept to get over. In our opinion the most important property any new camera has, is it’s comfortable to use. You may have had your heart set on watching your significant other opening a beautiful gift rapped present. But the truth is, if that camera is difficult to use or understand it is going to sit in a cupboard.
Our advice is an envelope with an “I owe you one camera” in it. Then after the big day take your significant other to a good camera store and let them chose the camera for themselves. Being comfortable with the camera is so important. It has to be the right size, buy a small camera for someone who has long fingers they are literally, a pain to use. It may not be the surprise you were hoping for, but owning a new camera, which is easy to use, is so much better.
