The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust does some amazing work, rescuing orphan elephants from all over Kenya. Once safely in the Nairobi nursery, the work really begins. The goal of the Trust is to raise these orphans and release them back to the wild.
In the case of Wendi the star of the video it has been a 15 year commitment. Young elephants are very fragile. Some orphans never recover from the trauma of losing their mothers so young. To save a baby orphan elephant requires 24 hour care. Keepers eat, sleep and play with the babies seeing to the physical and emotional needs of each individual.
Wendi’s story, is one of success after leaving the orphanage at Nairobi, she transferred to Tsavo National Park. After being reintroduced to the wild, thanks to the Trust, she has once again become a wild elephant. The payoff for all that hard work is when she returned to the stockade at Tsavo with her own wild calf.
The work the trust does need money in order to continue. This is the season for exchanging gifts. Why not make a gift of life to a baby elephant. You can adopt one to the orphans either for yourself or as a gift for someone you love. Visit The David Sheldrick Trust website and adopt an orphan.
